Embarking on a Creative Journey: Jumping in with Rommel Rojas

Rommel Rokas
Filipino Writer and Actor, Rommel Rojas

From the vibrant streets of Davao, Philippines, to the bustling energy of the United States, Rommel Rojas’s career journey is a testament to the power of resilience and passion. Born and raised in Davao, Rommel initially set his sights on a career in Advertising, armed with a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from Ateneo de Davao University. His decade-long tenure in advertising was marked by creativity and success, yet a twist of fate in 2014 would steer him toward a path he had long cherished.

The unexpected turn of losing his job became the catalyst for Rommel to rekindle his passion for acting—a dream that harked back to his youth. As a child, Rommel was captivated by iconic TV shows like Friends, The Nanny, Beverly Hills 90210, and Melrose Place. His college years saw him shine in a sketch competition, climbing from city-level accolades to regional and national recognition. This early exposure to performing arts laid the groundwork for his future endeavors.

Rommel’s journey into acting wasn’t merely a leap of faith; it was a strategic pivot towards fulfilling a lifelong dream. “When I got laid off, that’s when I explored many different options,” Rommel reflects on his decision to dive into acting classes and Meisner training. By 2018, he had fully embraced his new career trajectory, a decision encapsulated in his resolve to “JUMP IN.”

Since then, Rommel has been enjoying his various stints in the entertainment industry. His repertoire includes theater productions with the Company of Angels, and the creation of the short film “Centerpiece,” which he wrote, produced, acted in, and presented at various film festivals in 2019. In 2022, he played the role of “Professor Tasio,” in the stage play #DONT, executive produced by yours truly, followed by a role in the upcoming web series “No Room For Love,” directed by Malou and Randal Kamradt.

Naughty Maids TV series currently in development, created by Rommel Rojas

Currently, Rommel is at the helm of developing the TV series Naughty Maids, a project that promises to blend humor, intrigue, and unconventional narratives. Recipient of various writing accolades from Yucca Valley Film Festival, New York Screenwriting Awards, and The Comedy Film Festival in Austin, the series follows Ramon as he inherits his late mother’s struggling “sexy cleaning business,” aiming to win over their sole client. Complications arise when Ramon’s estranged best friend, Calixto, a budding sleuth, suspects their client of murder, setting the stage for a thrilling, comedic journey.

For Rommel, storytelling is not just an art form but a mission to reshape narratives and challenge stereotypes, particularly regarding queer characters in the Philippines. “I always believe in creating your own content,” says Rommel, emphasizing the importance of self-driven projects in an industry where opportunities can be scarce. His collaboration with Julio Vega on Naughty Maids highlights this commitment, aiming to showcase diverse, nuanced characters that defy traditional roles.

As Naughty Maids moves into the fundraising stage, Rommel and his team invite supporters to contribute to their creative journey.
