Living one’s dream in a city that can be as cutthroat and unforgiving as New York may sound impossible, but Vin Servillon is living proof that anything can happen when talent and grit meet opportunity. After breaking into NYC’s art scene with mesmerizing paintings, this self-taught, Filipino-American artist has proven the power of art fueled by passion and perseverance.
Stepping away from traditional Filipino career paths to make a name for himself as an artist has shown to be rewarding. But Servillon’s success has not come without struggle.
“I’m lucky and very grateful [to be] where I am right now, but at the time I wasn’t really thinking of being a professional artist because I grew up in this very traditional Asian family where unfortunately—I mean, in my own family at least—creativity isn’t seen as something that can be a career or a job,” Servillon recalls as he reflects on his creative journey.
With a body of work that is as undeniably unique as his, captivating an audience comes naturally. But there’s more to his art than meets the eye. Mixed into every brushstroke is a touch of healing paired with humble hopes of stirring emotions and leaving a lasting impact on all who get lost in his art.
“I want my work to be exposed to more people, hopefully it touches them the way that it touches me. I hope it inspires people to chase their dreams and dream of something outside their traditional family values.”
